Match preview: Forest Green Rovers (A)

23 October 2025

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side are on the road for the second time in five days as we lock horns with another promotion hopeful in Forest Green Rovers, kicking-off at 15:00.

Last season for the Rovers

Forest Green nearly made an immediate return to Sky Bet League Two last term after finishing in third place. However, they fell short in the play-offs after a penalty shootout defeat to finalists Southend United which resulted in the departure of Steve Cotterill.

One to watch

A key figure in Forest Green’s rise up the leagues in recent campaigns, Christian Doidge is looking to guide their return back into the Football League. Having netted 59 goals in 108 appearances in all competitions at The New Lawn, the 33-year-old Welshman ended his three-year spell with stints at Bolton Wanderers as well as Hibernian and Kilmarnock before returning to Gloucestershire last year.

The Wood

Our unbeaten run in all competitions stretched to 17 games last time out in our 2-2 draw at York City on Tuesday night. Matt Rush broke the deadlock inside two minutes for his ninth goal of the campaign before Alex Newby drew level just before the break.

It was that man Rush who restored the one-goal cushion with 66 minutes on the clock before the Minstermen came back once again to equalise courtesy of Ryan Fallowfield with one minute remaining.

Last time we met

In the 2016/17 season, we first hosted Forest Green in a National League encounter and a 1-0 win ensued in August 2016, Ricky Shakes grabbing the only goal of the game with 30 minutes on the clock.

The reverse fixture in Nailsworth came six months later and Mark Cooper’s side made it six games unbeaten as they went on to seal promotion thanks to a 2-0 victory with goals from Christian Doidge and debutant Omar Bugiel.
