It was honours even in Lincolnshire as Boreham Wood had to make do with a point in a match they largely dominated. An early goal from Matt Rush and a second-half equaliser from Callum Roberts ensured a share of the spoils.
Luke Garrard made one change to last Saturday’s win at Boston United, with Charles Clayden coming in for Lewis Richardson.
It took only thirty seconds for Boreham Wood to take the lead when a Charles Clayden cross was deflected into the path of Matt Rush, who couldn’t miss from close range. The hosts then started to play the ball around, spurred on by their noisy support, but on eight minutes Femi Ilesanmi nearly silenced them again with a well-struck shot that was well saved by former Hull City keeper Rory Watson.
Three minutes later, the Irons had a good chance to equalise when some intricate play between Kian Scales and Dec Howe created a chance for Alfie Beestin, whose shot was well saved by Finlay Herrick. On 15 minutes an excellent pass from Clayden picked out Rush, but he was unable to guide the ball past Watson.
A minute later, former Notts County player Callum Roberts fired over from a free kick. On 20 minutes Jeff King forced Watson into another good save. Callum Reynolds did the same two minutes later. Soon after, Abdul Abdulmalik turned Joe Starbuck inside out before delivering a cross that Zak Brunt somehow hit over the bar when well placed. On 32 minutes Clayden cut inside on his left foot and his well-struck effort was deflected wide. Seven minutes later Beestin shot straight at Herrick from distance.
HT: Scunthorpe United 0-1 Boreham Wood
Boreham Wood started the second half on the front foot and, three minutes after the restart, Clayden shot just wide of Watson’s goal. On 54 minutes another excellent run from Abdulmalik ended with him playing the ball across the area and, although Rush was sliding in, he couldn’t get on the end of it.
The Iron, who had been quiet since the break, had a good chance two minutes later when Starbuck played in Roberts, who dragged his shot just wide. Wood continued to dominate, and, on 61 minutes, Brunt forced Watson into another good save.
The hosts got their equaliser on 74 minutes when Chris Bush brought down Tyrell Sellars-Fleming in the penalty area. Roberts’ penalty was saved by Herrick, but he was able to slot away the rebound. For the first time in the match, the Irons started to control possession and Sellars-Fleming forced an excellent save from Herrick on 84 minutes. Right on 90 minutes Roberts played in Carlton Ubaezuonu, who fired just wide.
