It was a wonderful performance on the road from Boreham Wood against an in-form Yeovil Town side who had won their last three league games. First-half goals from Abdul Abdulmalik and Matt Rush, as well as a second-half strike from Femi Ilesanmi, were enough for the three points but, in truth, it could have been many more.

Luke Garrard named an unchanged team from Tuesday night’s draw against Southend United.

Boreham Wood got off to a fast start when, on two minutes, a Zak Brunt pass picked out Jeff King, who then went on a run down the right before passing to Charles Clayden, whose shot was blocked by a Yeovil defender. On seven minutes, Brunt was just off target with a rasping effort from outside the area. On 20 minutes, Boreham Wood took the lead – and what a goal it was. Abdul Abdulmalik collected the ball from Femi Ilesanmi before skipping past Andrew Oluwabori and curling a lovely shot past Jed Ward into the bottom corner. This was surely the best goal Boreham Wood have scored all season.

Boreham Wood continued to control possession, but there were some occasional breaks from the Glovers. On 32 minutes, Byron Pendleton went on a run in the penalty area before Callum Reynolds made an excellent tackle, just when it looked like he was going to shoot. If the tackle was anything less than perfect, it would have been a penalty for the hosts. Two minutes later, an excellent free kick from King hit the Yeovil post with Ward beaten. On 41 minutes, Abdulmalik tried his luck again, but his shot deflected wide off Charles Clayden.

Soon afterwards, Brunt fired just wide. In the final minute of seven added on at the end of the half, Wood got their second – and it was another brilliant goal. Abdulmalik again was at the centre of things. He went on another great run before releasing Clayden down the left. His inch-perfect cross was put away by Matt Rush, who couldn’t miss. It was the fourth match running that the former Sutton United striker has scored in and came at the end of an incredible half for Wood.

HT: Yeovil Town 0–2 Boreham Wood

Despite the hosts having a lot of possession at the start of the second half, Wood showed no sign of letting up from their dominance. Clayden thought he’d added a third seven minutes after the restart with a lovely curling effort which was somehow tipped away by keeper Ward. On 58 minutes, a great one-two between Brunt and Rush ended with Brunt shooting just wide. Five minutes later, Wood got their third goal on 63 minutes, and it was a welcome first of the season for Ilesanmi – his first strike since that classic goal against Dorking in last season’s play-offs. The goal finished the match as a contest.

On 72 minutes, the hosts were nearly back in it when Harvey Greenslade tried to curl the ball into the Wood net but fired just wide. Three minutes later, King forced Ward into another really good save from a well-struck shot. On 78 minutes, Lewis Richardson’s shot was saved by Ward, but the ball fell into the path of Rush, who put it in. The linesman correctly ruled this out for offside. Two minutes later, Luke McCormick forced Finlay Herrick into his only meaningful save of the match. In the last minute of normal time, Brunt hit an excellent dipping shot which Ward was again able to save. In the last of six minutes added on, Junior Dixon fired just wide of the Yeovil goal.
