Boreham Wood recorded their third league victory in a row as they aim to finish as high up in the league as possible to ensure a more favourable play-off campaign. Two goals from Matt Rush and one from both Charles Clayden and Tyrone Marsh were enough to secure three points for Luke Garrard’s men.

Luke Garrard made two changes to the starting line-up from last Saturday’s win against Hemel Hempstead, with Charlie O’Connell and Charles Clayden replacing the injured Jack Payne and Jon Benton.

Boreham Wood got off to an excellent start and were dominant over their hosts. Tom Whelan forced Slough stopper Charlie Horlock into a good save on three minutes. Two minutes later, Jayden Richardson’s powerful shot crashed off the crossbar, and when the ball fell to Charles Clayden, he crossed to Matt Rush, who made no mistake from close range to give Wood the lead. On eight minutes, a curling effort from Abdul Abdulmalik looked destined for the corner of the net before the ball was deflected off Scott Davies. At this stage, the hosts couldn’t live with Clayden, who was causing all sorts of trouble down the left. Clayden got his reward on 15 minutes by adding a second from close range after a Richardson cross was deflected into his path.

After going two goals in front, Wood were perhaps guilty of sitting back on their lead for a while, allowing Slough back into the game. The hosts pulled one back on 33 minutes with an excellent curling effort from John Gilbert, which gave Nathan Ashmore no chance in the Wood goal. Erico Sousa went close two minutes later but was denied by Horlock in the Town goal. Six minutes later, David Ogbonna went close to equalising for the hosts but fired just over. He was made to pay for that miss on the stroke of half-time when Wood restored their two-goal lead — and what a goal it was. A lovely backheel from Abdulmalik found Clayden, whose inch-perfect cross was expertly finished by Rush for his second of the match.

HT: Slough Town 1–3 Boreham Wood

The hosts started the second half on the ascendancy, and a minute after the restart, Sean Duodu headed just wide from a Gilbert cross. On 52 minutes, the hosts were awarded a penalty when a Duodu shot struck the arm of Josef Yarney, giving referee Josh Crofts no option but to point to the spot. Gilbert stepped up to take it, but the ever-reliable penalty stopper Nathan Ashmore was equal to it, pulling off an excellent save.

After this, a succession of substitutions for both sides interrupted the flow of the match, and the hosts were unable to threaten for a long period afterwards. Boreham Wood added a fourth on 80 minutes, and it was substitute Tyrone Marsh who scored his first goal since the opening day of the season with a good finish. The same player struck a free kick just over four minutes later. In the third minute of stoppage time, the hosts pulled another goal back when a great run from Nnaemeka Anyanwu and a pass to Ogbonna was well finished by the Slough forward.

FT: Slough Town 2–4 Boreham Wood

It was a welcome win against a Slough Town side with a good home record. Boreham Wood now have two matches to complete in the league season — at home to Enfield Town and away to Tonbridge Angels. Luke Garrard will expect maximum points from both to take a good run of form into the play-off campaign.

Boreham Wood: Ashmore, Coxe, Richardson (Ilesanmi 46), Reynolds (Bush 86), Yarney, O’Connell, Whelan (Sagaf 68), Clayden (Dixon 79), Sousa (Marsh 64), Abdulmalik, Rush.
