Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side are on the road for the second time in five days as we lock horns with another promotion hopeful in Forest Green Rovers, kicking-off at 15:00.

Last season for the Rovers

Forest Green nearly made an immediate return to Sky Bet League Two last term after finishing in third place. However, they fell short in the play-offs after a penalty shootout defeat to finalists Southend United which resulted in the departure of Steve Cotterill.

One to watch

A key figure in Forest Green’s rise up the leagues in recent campaigns, Christian Doidge is looking to guide their return back into the Football League. Having netted 59 goals in 108 appearances in all competitions at The New Lawn, the 33-year-old Welshman ended his three-year spell with stints at Bolton Wanderers as well as Hibernian and Kilmarnock before returning to Gloucestershire last year.

The Wood

Our unbeaten run in all competitions stretched to 17 games last time out in our 2-2 draw at York City on Tuesday night. Matt Rush broke the deadlock inside two minutes for his ninth goal of the campaign before Alex Newby drew level just before the break.

It was that man Rush who restored the one-goal cushion with 66 minutes on the clock before the Minstermen came back once again to equalise courtesy of Ryan Fallowfield with one minute remaining.

Last time we met

In the 2016/17 season, we first hosted Forest Green in a National League encounter and a 1-0 win ensued in August 2016, Ricky Shakes grabbing the only goal of the game with 30 minutes on the clock.

The reverse fixture in Nailsworth came six months later and Mark Cooper’s side made it six games unbeaten as they went on to seal promotion thanks to a 2-0 victory with goals from Christian Doidge and debutant Omar Bugiel.

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s make the trip up north to lock horns with a York City outfit on the back of consecutive victories in their pursuit of promotion, kicking-off at 19:45.

Last season for the Minstermen

A total of 96 points would normally be enough to secure the Enterprise National League title but due to Barnet’s persistent excellence throughout last term, York had to settle for a place in the play-offs.

Finishing in second place meant they had a home fixture against Oldham Athletic, a fixture where they fell to a 3-0 defeat to the eventual winners of the play-offs.

One to watch

A ruthless striker who has already netted nine goals in 13 league appearances, Ollie Pearce will be looking to spearhead York’s promotion charge. The 30-year-old arrived in North Yorkshire ahead of the 2024/25 season from Worthing, playing an integral role in their second-place finish having netted on 31 occasions in the National League.

The Wood

Our unbeaten run stretched to 16 games last time out thanks to a comfortable 2-0 win over Eastleigh thanks to second-half strikes from Abdul Abdulmalik and Lewis Richardson.

This was our third clean sheet in a row following impressive 3-0 victories away from home at Yeovil Town and Eastbourne Borough, the latter in the Emirates FA Cup, which has set-up a First Round tie against Sky Bet League Two side Crawley Town next weekend.

Last time we met

It was honors even with the Minstermen in both clashes in the 2023/24 campaign.

Dipo Akinyemi opened the scoring for York on 21 minutes before Lee Ndlovu equalised 12 minutes into the second-half. Although Quevin Castro restored the one-goal lead five minutes after the leveller, Ndlovu was on hand to ensure we headed back to Hertfordshire with a point with his brace.

The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw at the Mangata Developments Stadium Meadow Park – Chris Bush broken the deadlock with a stunning strike seven minutes from time but Adam Crookes’ last-gasp strike meant the points were shared.

Boreham Wood Football Club can confirm that tickets are now on sale for our upcoming Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper tie at home to League Two side Crawley Town on Saturday 1 November, kicking off at 15:00.

If we want to continue our recent run of causing cup upsets, then we’re going to need a noisy crowd, we’ll need to create an intimidating atmosphere and if we get that coupled with our normal underdog mentality, then we are hopefully on our way to once again overcoming league opposition.

Chairman Danny Hunter said: “These days used to overwhelm us, but I do not believe that’s the case anymore after beating the likes of AFC Wimbledon, Bristol Rovers and Bournemouth in recent years. That said, we know you cannot win these types of games on your own, you need your supporters to come out and be at it. You need a partisan and noisy cup atmosphere for the players to react to… I feel if we can get that and push with home advantage, then we can turn this cup tie into a 50/50 game and that will give us an underdog’s chance to create some more cup history.”

The club are asking the local community to attend in your numbers, let’s give the players an atmosphere to make even more FA Cup history. Let’s try to claim another league scalp and become FA Cup giant killers once again…

To do that we are going to need the Wood Army, we are going to need our drummer and the North Bank, we are going to need the noise, need our town and need our wider community. We are asking you all to get together, come out in force and let Crawley Town know this is our house.

We know when you decide to pack out the Mangata Developments Stadium and bring your noisy best with you, we win football matches and together we make memories. See you soon, we know you won’t let us down!

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side return to Enterprise National League action with the visit of an in-form Eastleigh outfit, kicking-off at 15:00.

Last season for the Spitfires

It was back-to-back 13th-placed finishes for the Hampshire-based side in the past two seasons, finishing nine points off of Southend United in the final play-off place last term.

One to watch

Making a promising start to life at the Silverlake Stadium, Aaron Blair has netted six league goals so far this term in 13 appearances. The 25-year-old forward put pen to paper on a deal for this season in the summer following an impressive stint at Maidstone United where he played a pivotal role in the Stones making it to the National League South Promotion Final last season.

The Wood

It was another superb showing last time out as we progressed to the first round of the Emirates FA Cup after a 3-0 win at Eastbourne Borough. Following an even first-half, the Wood’s class shone through thanks to strikes from Matt Rush, Abdul Abdulmalik and Junior Dixon in the second-half.

This followed another 3-0 victory on our travels, beating Yeovil Town in the league to maintain our place in the play-offs and be within two points of leaders Forest Green Rovers.

Last time we met

Saturday will be our first clash with the Spitfires in nearly two years. We faced off in Hertfordshire in January 2024 and a thrilling 4-4 draw ensued with Erico Sousa netting a last-gasp penalty to secure a late point.

The reverse league meeting in the 2023/24 campaign saw Paul McCallum score a brace to seal a 2-1 win with Tyrone Marsh’s leveller proving to count for nothing.

Today we welcome our very good friends from Eastleigh FC, can I wish their Directors, Manager, players and supporters a pleasant stay with us and a safe journey home.

For me this feels like a very good time after winning in the FA Cup at Eastbourne Borough and with around a third of the season gone, to take stock of our growing ambition, our progress and possibly take this opportunity to try and improve ourselves by allowing Luke and Charlie to look at the current squad and look at the current transfer and loan market.

Having spoken to them both about their thoughts on further recruitment, they do feel this is perhaps a good time to evaluate where we can improve competition, no matter how small the margins. As such, they will look at how we might strengthen where possible in certain areas, but that is sometimes hard to do in mid October as a lot of the available players are either out of our price range, short on fitness or certified sick notes.

As such my bank balance will only empty if a good player becomes available in the right area, with the right pedigree and with the right injury record. That said, experience is telling me that Luke and Charlie are quite right in terms of this being a very good time for us to strengthen.

It’s not quite as simple though as, “let’s strengthen”, because we’ve quietly built a quality squad that’s very much together and we will not without a lot of thought look to disrupt it too much. I completely understand that we do have a slightly smaller squad compared to most of the clubs currently fighting at the top of this division, but as I’ve said many times before, a small squad can sometimes be a plus not a minus, as all players want to play.

In truth, we are at present playing some great football, it’s also very evident that we have a real togetherness that shows and this squad are demonstrating they have a big appetite for hard work. We already know that we’ve surprised everyone with our quality since the start of the season and in that time we’ve beaten some very good sides. In recent weeks Luke has ensured that we have not become over confident and I feel we’ve deservedly moved ourselves into the top 5 of this league.

That is of course rewarding for Luke and the dressing room, so now might be the right time for me to support Luke, Charlie and the dressing room with possibly another signing before the lads get too fatigued after their recent efforts in both league and cup, and before it affects our league form.

I don’t want to over dramatise these things, as fatigue is the same for every club, and we can help things considerably by controlling our discipline, thus control our suspensions and that would be a huge plus this season. At our level of course some clubs have much bigger attendances, some will have bigger squads and some will have far bigger budgets. So to counter that we might in the short term need to consider signing an extra body or two, but Is this the right time for me to sell the family silver ha-ha, to wheel and deal, or go for broke? No it’s not, but it is time to open up the purse strings but please understand my budget margins are still very tight.

I’m not a Chairman who has ever taken risks with our first team budget and any overspend if built only on emotion, but equally when you start a season as well as we have, and if an opportunity appears for us to go to the next level, then I’ll always do my very best to get a player onboard if Luke really wants him.

My financial disposition has been helped a tad by the departure of Nathan Ashmore, who’s been allowed to go out on loan to Bedford Town in the National North. This loan materialised at Nathan’s request, as he wanted to play more and be ready in case Finn Herrick picked up an injury or was recalled by West Ham United.

As an ‘old school’ Chairman Nathans loan had to work for me on a business level. This loan though has worked out for all parties after I made it clear to Charlie Hunter that if he could get the loan monies sorted out, then I was always going to allow it. Why? Because we have a 24 hour recall, we’re getting Nathan’s wages paid in full and because I can allow those loan monies to go straight back into Luke’s budget.

The only downside at present to report, is that our Academy recruitment and our education provision has not quite been at the level we could have reasonably expected this season and that will bring me problems further down the line. As such I’m going to need a full review of all things Academy prior to Christmas and would then hope to have things either back on track or the problem solved by May 2026.

Only after my full review will I sit down with Billy Hunter, Luke Garrard, Charlie Hunter, Micky Engwell and Ross Weare and decide where I might take things. On a more positive note after the recent 3-0 pumping of both Yeovil Town and Eastbourne Borough, I note one, two or even 100 of you, are getting a little bit carried away with our good start to this season and who can blame you?

That excitement is ok by me because it’s totally shared by me, especially after that horrendous sleepless night relegation season 18 months ago, followed by our late, late promotion charge just 6 months ago. As such our fans, sponsors and partners excitement does not in any way feel like additional pressure to me, as I’m enjoying it to the max as much as you are.

What I would say to everyone is “The National League is incredibly expensive, it’s bloody relentless, it’s full of good teams, it’s full of good players, it’s full of bigger clubs with bigger attendances than ours, with far bigger budgets, but so what and at present who cares, lets just enjoy this moment in time together, let’s continue to dream big, but at the end of the day let’s all stay just a tad realistic.”

What comforts me most and it might sound a tad big headed is, even though this league is a huge challenge to us on crowd averages of around a thousand, it is not filled with many better run football clubs than ours. That is a huge factor in how I go about my business and it’s why I always
ask that you supporters fully appreciate my staff, because what they do for me, you, this football club, our town and our wider community is truly off the scale and none of them, trust me, are getting rich on what I’m paying them.

As such I don’t care too much if we hit a bad patch further down the track, as it’s all part of life at National League level and it’s why we will try to plan ahead by strengthening where we can now to try and see off any avoidable mini slump in the months ahead. Slumps of course will come to the very biggest and best football clubs in the land, so if a slump should arrive at our door, lets hope it doesn’t last as long as say Manchester United’s, Morecambe’s or our good friends up the road at St Albans City.

As Luke, our dressing room and you supporters soon look toward Christmas, we as a club are looking to navigate the first half of this season by staying at the top end of the table. However after the Southend United draw a few weeks ago I for one out of necessity must turn my attention more
to next season and the new away fan zone and South Stand build and in truth my focus, expertise, energy and project skills must be harnessed fully in that area.

It’s paramount we get the ground completed on schedule and on budget in the foreseeable future. All of which means I’m going to need a lot of committed people wrapped around me. As that will equate to expert project management, advice and that can only help me create an intelligent build programme and ensure we get my planning application through at the first time of asking.

If I can get my pre build programme scheduled and the whole project fully costed before Xmas, it would mean I’m back on schedule regarding the overall project. If officers at HBC are reading my programme notes this week, then it’s time for us to get ready for many more behind closed door meetings, as I’ll need everyone’s support including the HBC Executive, Councillors, Officers and Planners.

I’ll also need a lot of help from all our local Councillors across the aisle, plus EBTC and AFC, and I might need to lean heavily on my bank balance, accountant, architect, trusted contractors and Football Foundation…. I’ll of course be as driven and as mad as always, as it’s the only way I know how to do these full on projects, while ensuring if we begin the build before the end of this current season that we’ll finish on time ready for next season.

So for my own madness and possible insanity, I do need everyone to understand that I must manage my down time a little bit better than I have of late, As recently I’ve been completely caught up in our summer works, caught up in AWFC’s recent floodlight lunacy and in UEFA’s new ground grading madness. While like you supporters, I’ve got myself caught up and excited about our football team, by our fantastic start, by our new brand of football and in truth I’m still excited by just being back in the National League.

Anyway enough of my excitement and diatribe let’s get back to today. I’m happy to say after our promotion that we can once again welcome back the likes of Eastleigh FC and my old friend Stewart Donald to our humble abode. We already know what a difficult team they are to play against, and know both their strengths and their weaknesses. We also know our strengths, and this season we feel our strengths will give us a chance to win most football matches at the level.

Lastly, whoever you support let’s hope for and open, attacking game and may the best team win.

Take care,
Danny.

The National League has called on the entire football family to support a 3UP Day of Action next month and will change all its 15:00 fixtures on Saturday 15 November to kick-off at the later time of 15:03.

In the build-up to these games, the National League will mobilise football clubs across the UK, fan groups, players, managers, media personalities and politicians to highlight its widely popular campaign to attain three promotions into the English Football League (EFL). This unprecedented step is a response to the EFL Board’s unchanged stance on 3UP and their continued refusal to formally consult its 72 member clubs on the matter.

Over the coming weeks, the National League will reveal exactly what supporters of the 3UP campaign will do to help make these unique kick-off times a significant and impactful moment. On Saturday 15 November there are 24 National League teams across the country in action – and all of their fixtures will start at 15:03, as follows:

Altrincham v Brackley Town
Boreham Wood v Tamworth
Braintree Town v Truro
Carlisle United v Eastleigh
Forest Green Rovers v Gateshead
Hartlepool United v Wealdstone
Rochdale v Aldershot Town
Solihull Moors v Scunthorpe United
Sutton United v FC Halifax Town
Woking v Boston United
Yeovil Town v Southend United
York City v Morecambe

The 3UP Day of Action has the backing of the 72 National League clubs who are all playing their part in this latest initiative. Whilst the 48 National League North and South clubs do not have league fixtures on the day itself (it is Second Round Qualifying of the FA Trophy the same weekend) they will be fully involved as they were for the 3UP campaign launch.

Since launch, the 3UP campaign has now received widespread support from football organisations, sporting opinion formers, prominent broadcasters and dozens of MPs across all political parties – who are actively lobbying the EFL for change on behalf of the National League. Some of these MPs will take part in the 3UP Day of Action and recognise the campaign’s ‘Put Football First’ mission will help the new Independent Football Regulator achieve its publicly stated goals of protecting the financial resilience of clubs and preserving the heritage of the game for fans.

Over 93% of football supporters from across all divisions of the professional football pyramid support 3UP, including a significant 83% of EFL fans. These figures come from a substantive poll conducted by the Football Supporters Association (FSA) which has led to the well-respected body adopting 3UP as their official policy.

National League chair Jack Pearce MBE says: “Our 72 clubs – the majority of whom are over a century old and household names – simply won’t accept the current circumstances blocking them from parity and fairness with all the other professional teams in England.

“In response to the 3UP campaign launch, the EFL stated their understandable concerns over the ‘competitive balance’ across all leagues within the football pyramid and cited this as an underlying reason for delaying the matter of 3UP. But we don’t believe this should be the reason preventing progression on the matter.

“The ‘competitive balance’ issue simply doesn’t apply between the National League and EFL. For example, since two promotions were introduced to the National League in 2003, no title-winning club has ever been relegated from the EFL the following season. And almost half the clubs currently in the EFL’s three leagues have competed in the National League at one time or other.

“Since launching 3UP, we have been contacted by a remarkable number of EFL clubs who are privately supportive of the change but haven’t even been given the chance as a group of clubs to formerly discuss it.

“EFL chair Rick Parry stated two years’ ago that the EFL ‘needs to look downwards as well as upwards’ and that 3UP is a ‘perfectly logical argument’. We remain grateful for this broad outlook, but unfortunately no meaningful action has been forthcoming from the league since then.

“We therefore don’t think it is too much to ask the EFL to take some unconditional and supportive action to help all National League clubs up and down the country attain another promotion place. They have been waiting for 23 years for this moment. The forthcoming 3UP Day of Action on Saturday 15 November will be a great chance for everyone who cares about the national game to get involved and show their support to our clubs and fans. Together we can put football first.”

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side kick-off the Emirates FA Cup campaign as we lock horns with Eastbourne Borough in the fourth qualifying round, kicking-off at 15:00.

Last season for the Sports

It was nearly a season to remember in East Sussex as the Sports were defeated by Maidstone United in the Enterprise National League South play-off semi-final following a third-placed finish.

This was a sign of progression for Saturday’s hosts who avoided relegation by six points in the season prior.

One to watch

Captain Dan Quick played a pivotal role in Eastbourne’s success last season and he will be hoping to lead them away from the relegation zone this term. The former Crystal Palace youth defender has asserted himself as a regular in their backline since his arrival in the summer of 2023 and has appeared on eight occasions so far in the league this term.

The Wood

A 3-0 victory away at Yeovil Town ensured that we extended our unbeaten run to 12 National League matches. Abdul Abdulmalik opened the scoring with 20 minutes on the clock thanks to a sublime curling strike before Matt Rush and Femi Ilesanmi extended the advantage in a dominant showing.

Last time we met

We faced Eastbourne on two occasions last season with both sides competing for promotion to the National League.

The first meeting saw the Sports run out as 2-1 winners courtesy of Finn Mac Ballard-McBride’s winner before the Wood scored three goals within five second-half minutes to seal a 3-0 victory in March thanks to a Kwesi Appiah brace and Matt Rush’s stunning strike.

The club are delighted to announce that manager Luke Garrard has been named Enterprise National League Manager of the Month for September!

September saw the Wood claim five wins from seven, defeating Sutton United, Morecambe, Altrincham, Boston United, and Woking, while also picking up draws against Scunthorpe United and Southend United to round off a strong run.

Luke faced strong competition for the award, with Rochdale’s Jimmy McNulty, Yeovil Town’s Richard Dryden, and Forest Green’s Robbie Savage all enjoying fine months. However, the facts could not be overlooked with Garrard’s side collecting 17 points from a possible 21 during September, a record unmatched across the division.

This recognition is a testament to the brilliant work Luke, his backroom staff, and the squad have put in since promotion and to the positive momentum building around Meadow Park.

Congratulations, Gaffer! Let’s keep building.
